About this site

Music is an important part of Christian worship. As music leaders we select and prepare songs for worship every week. For each song we should be prepared to answer the question "Why is it included in Worship?" What does this song have to teach us? How is it related to a Biblical truth or concept?

Cross Medley

"Cross Medley"
arranged by Russell Mauldin

This is a medley of songs that focuses on the cross. The first, a familiar hymn written in Albion Michigan, by a Methodist pastor talks about the cross as something far away. The last, written by Fanny Crosby, another famous Methodist, is "Near the Cross". Five times in the Gospels Jesus tells us "take up your cross and follow me". Maybe I am just old fashioned (I have been told I am starting to get a little grey hair) but it seems to me we are never meant to be far from the cross. We are not to out grow it, or hide it away in a drawer. I am glad today to be worshiping in a church with the cross displayed in the sanctuary and on the outside of the building. As Fanny wrote. "Jesus keep me near the cross".
