I Stand Amazed in the Presence

This old hymn alludes to several scriptures about Jesus and His love and sacrifice. Their is one verse that says, "He took our sins ...and made them His very own. He bore the burden to Calvary..." Later in this service we will sing another old hymn, "Jesus Paid it All". 1 Peter 2:24 (NIV) says, "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed." Theologians have a fancy phrase for this; its called "substitutionary atonement", Jesus died in our place for our sins. Now you can wow your friends and co-workers this week with a fancy phrase, "substitutionary atonement". If you really want to make them say "wow", explain what substitutionary atonement can mean for them personally.
