About this site

Music is an important part of Christian worship. As music leaders we select and prepare songs for worship every week. For each song we should be prepared to answer the question "Why is it included in Worship?" What does this song have to teach us? How is it related to a Biblical truth or concept?

Hymn: Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus

In 1829 Dudley Tyng, a local church pastor in Philadelphia, was run
out of his church because of his strong anti-slavery views. A short
time later he was injured in a farming accident, as he lay dieing his
friend pastor George Duffield asked if he had any last thoughts. Tyng
replied, 'Tell them to stand up for Jesus!" At Tyng's memorial
sometime later Duffield read his new hymn text "Stand Up, Stand Up for
Jesus".

  1. Greetings from Wordwise Hymns. Thanks for your comments on George Duffield’s “Stand Up for Jesus.” You can read more about the background of the hymn on my blog today. And it occurs to me that it’s a great hymn for the first Sunday of the new year. If each Christian would take a stand for Christ, it would have a wonderful impact on our communities.
