Today's scripture from James uses the example of a large ship driven by strong winds yet steered by a relatively small rudder. While John Newton, captain of a slave ship, was attempting to steer through a violent storm. He recorded in his journal that when all seemed lost and the ship would surely sink, he exclaimed, “Lord, have mercy upon us.” Long story short, the rudder did hold, John Newton left the slave trade, became a preacher writer of many hymns including "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken,” and “Amazing Grace.”
James 3:3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
