About this site

Music is an important part of Christian worship. As music leaders we select and prepare songs for worship every week. For each song we should be prepared to answer the question "Why is it included in Worship?" What does this song have to teach us? How is it related to a Biblical truth or concept?

In the Name of the Lord

In the Name of the Lord
By Gloria Gaither, Sandi Patti and Phil McHugh

Peter and John were in Jerusalem teaching about Jesus and the resurrection. While they were teaching a well know crippled man was healed.  As you can imagine this stirred up some excitement and interest. The religious leaders of the day were not amused. Just a few months earlier they thought they had taken care of this "Jesus problem".  When they asked Peter (Acts 4:7 ..."By what power or what name did you do this?".   His answer is (Acts 4:10) "...It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed."

I like the council's reaction to Peter's statement, (Acts 4:13) "...they took note that these men had been with Jesus." They recognized Jesus influence on Peter and John. This was not a good thing to the council members, but it should be our goal. Whether we are speaking out boldly in a hostile environment, like Peter and John or offering a quiet word of encouragement to someone who is having a bad day. Our goal, or course, is not be that people see how kind or brave we are but that they see the strength, power and hope that comes through a relationship with Christ.
